About Alpha Phi

Alpha Phi’s history begins in 1872, rooted in the bold innovation of our Ten Founders—some of Syracuse University’s first female students. Several decided that they were not satisfied with merely participating in the classroom, and denied admission to the men’s fraternities, several woman decided to create their own fraternity. They envisioned an expansive sisterhood, and their leadership and organizational practices set the tone for the Alpha Phi of today. Much like our present-day membership, the Founders were a group of curious women who did not back down from a challenge—women who had a vision for our sisterhood and the confidence in one another to make an impact.

Alpha Phi International Fraternity goes beyond the typical Greek organization. It forms a supportive community of empowered women across the United States and Canada, boasting 175 collegiate chapters and a global network of accomplished alumnae. Our community comprises over 250,000 members dedicated to lifelong friendships, leadership, academic excellence, personal growth, and community involvement.

At the core of Alpha Phi membership are shared ideals—creating a unique sisterhood bond, fostering a spirit of generosity, setting high standards for character, and promoting a drive for innovation. These High Ideals of Membership define what it truly means to be a part of Alpha Phi, shaping a meaningful and purposeful experience.
